Edgar Allan Poe

One can argue about what makes Edgar Allan Poe a writer worthy of study. Most people would use words like “brilliant” or “ingenious” to describe his use of technique in creating his best works. Those reading for purely entertainment value might use other terms to describe his masterpieces such as “creepy” or “eerie.” The works rings with an undeniable center of truth that seems to touch the soul with bony fingers. However, one can find evidence in the words of Poe himself in order to analyze the creativity of his work. These words can be found in Poe’s essay “The Philosophy of Composition,” an essay that takes us directly into the mind of Poe as he analyzes the way he approaches construction. This essay will take a look at what Poe tells the world about writing creatively and how that may be reflected in two of his fiction pieces.
