Police in the United Kingdom: An Analysis of Confidence Issues
This eight-page undergraduate paper examines why many people believe that the British police have lost the confidence and respect of the British public. The author discusses the impact of youth crime on public perceptions of police effectiveness, the reforms implemented to redress this, and the troubling problem of institutionalized racism within police organizations. In the process, the Tony Martin case is analysed, the Stephen Lawrence murder is examined, and the BBC documentary revealing racism in UK police ranks is discussed.
